National Grid Plans UK's Largest Substation on Teesside Near AI Datacentre
National Grid has acquired 73 acres at Dorman Point on Teesside to build Britain's biggest electricity substation, supporting planned AI datacentre development.
National Grid has moved closer to constructing the United Kingdom's largest electricity substation on Teesside, acquiring a substantial land parcel adjacent to a site earmarked for major artificial intelligence infrastructure development.
The company agreed last week to purchase 29.5 hectares — roughly 73 acres — at Dorman Point, a site held by Teesworks, a local private-public partnership operating in the north-east of England. The deal was first reported by Sky News.

The planned substation is expected to generate significant new electricity capacity for the region, positioning Teesside as a potential hub for large-scale AI datacentres at a time when the UK is aggressively expanding its digital infrastructure. Datacentres supporting AI workloads require substantially more power than conventional facilities, making proximity to high-capacity grid infrastructure a critical factor for developers scouting locations.
The Teesworks site has been the focus of considerable economic redevelopment attention in recent years, with officials aiming to attract inward investment to the north-east. A major substation co-located near a prospective datacentre campus could accelerate those efforts by removing one of the primary constraints — reliable, large-scale power supply — that typically slows such projects.
The broader push reflects a national urgency in Britain to build out the grid and digital infrastructure needed to remain competitive in the global AI race. Continue reading at Business | The Guardian.
